How to Set Up Google Analytics for Your Website

Google Analytics is a free tool from Google that lets you see basic information about how people are using your website. It can help you understand things like:

  • How many people are visiting your website
  • Which pages are being viewed most often
  • Where visitors are coming from, such as Google, social media, or other websites
  • General trends in your website traffic over time

Google Analytics is not required for your website to work, but it is a helpful tool if you want access to long-term website traffic information.

Step 1: Create or Sign In to Your Google Account

To use Google Analytics, you will need a Google account. If you already use Gmail, Google Workspace, or another Google service, you can use that same login. If you do not have a Google account, you can create one here: Create a Google Account

Step 2: Go to Google Analytics

Visit the Google Analytics website: https://analytics.google.com/ Sign in with the Google account you would like to use to manage your website analytics.

Step 3: Create Your Analytics Account

Once you are inside Google Analytics, follow the prompts to create a new account. You will typically be asked to enter:

  • Account Name: This can be your business name.
  • Property Name: This can be your website name.
  • Time Zone: Choose your local time zone.
  • Currency: Choose your preferred currency.

Step 4: Add Your Website

During setup, Google will ask what you want to track. Choose Web and enter your website address. Make sure to enter your full website URL, such as:

https://www.yourwebsite.com

Google will then create a Web Data Stream for your website.

Step 5: Send Us the Google Tag or Measurement ID

After your website has been added, Google will provide a tracking code, often called a Google Tag, or a Measurement ID that starts with G-. It may look similar to this:

G-XXXXXXXXXX

Please send us either the Google Tag instructions or the Measurement ID, and we can add it to your website for you.

Step 6: Confirm That Tracking Is Working

After the tag has been added to your website, Google Analytics may take some time to begin showing data. You can usually confirm activity by visiting your website and then checking the Realtime report inside Google Analytics.

A Simple Note About Analytics

Google Analytics is helpful for seeing general website trends, but it does not tell the full story of your online marketing. For example, it may not show every phone call, form inquiry, IDX search, saved listing, or direct interaction someone has with you after visiting the site. It is best used as a general traffic and activity tool, rather than a complete lead tracking system.
